Spring Break - Woo Hoo!

3 weeks ago was Spring Break round here for our kiddos. We planned a fun little vacay to Charleston and Myrtle Beach. The best part of the plan was we were only going to need to take one car because Pete had meetings in Charleston Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday which meant he would not need a car.

We left on Saturday and got down in time for a fun party at one of Pete's coworkers houses. If you are familiar with Daniel Island then you know what a beautiful place this is. For the rest of you picture "like being on a vacation everyday" type setting mixed with equal parts Truman Show. Gorgeous houses, beautiful yards, great pools and playgrounds...the type of place where people take golf carts to the store and when dropping the kids at school. Nice, huh :-) It was Bridge Run weekend in Charleston so lots of fun coworkers/friends were at the party. It was a really great beginning to our trip!

Sunday we did some outlet shopping - Pete forgot casual pants in his " home late Friday only to turn around and leave Saturday morning" packing transfer. No worries cause we had time to kill before we checked into our swanky downtown Charleston hotel. We would be staying at the hotel where all Pete's meetings would take place. It was a beautiful hotel - so nice that you really don't even want to be there with your kids. The rooms are fairly small and the bathrooms are the size of a closet. Perspective: Izzy was amazed by the lobby and all the sparkly lights...but thought our room didn't even have a bathroom because it was so small. As much as I dreaded the arrangements with the kids I was happy that I would not have to leave our more family friendly hotel in Mt. Pleasant to take Pete to and from the meetings.

The plan for the week was:
Monday: House hunting
Tuesday: Check out Drew's preschool and visit with a friend of mine
Wednesday: free day til Pete finished with meetings and then head to Myrtle Beach
Thursday/Friday: stay at a really fantastic Myrtle Beach hotel with Pete only going on one call over those 2 days (just so we could claim "work" and he could expense the hotel)

So Monday the kids and I got up really early to meet the realtor and see 8 houses. The kids did FANTASTIC and our realtor was super great! 3 of the houses we saw had a floor plan that would be conducive to our needs. Unfortunately they are quite expensive :-) Let me just say that viewing a house online can be very deceptive! I decided to "up" my house budget because I didn't like anything in my price range. So now I am hoping some of the houses that I do like will stay on the market and drop within my budget. Wishful thinking...yes. ...but in this market anything is possible!

After we left the realtor I took the kids to lunch. Drew said he wasn't hungry but I assumed it was because he was just tired. I ordered him lunch anyway and figured he could eat it back at the hotel. Izzy and I ate and Drew just kind of rested his head on the bench. We got back to the hotel, went up to our room to drop off some food and then decided we wanted to check out the cupcake shop down the street.

On the way to the cupcake shop Drew made a really loud noise and then told me he was gonna be sick. Sure enough he tossed his cookies all over the sidewalk in front of St. Andrew's Church. Not once, not twice, not three, but 6 times! As soon as he was done he said, "Okay Mama, now we can go get cupcakes."

Bad Mom Moment Coming Up:
... I continued on and took him (remember I am the same lady who let her daughter continue to see shows at Hollywood Studio even after we exited the line so she could throw up). I am a lock for Worst Mom of the Year 2010!

The cupcake place...and can I just say the chocolate chip cheesecake cupcake was well worth the price!

Drew had a couple licks of frosting and then back to the hotel we went. The poor kid continued to vomit and have diarrhea for the next 6 hours.

The poor kid was miserable! Izzy was a champ though! It can't be easy to be stuck on the 10 floor of a hotel in a gross smelling room for hours on end. She entertained herself so well. ...and had her first experience with room service.

I love how her little eye is peeking out through the hole

Room service and housekeeping became very familiar with our room that night. If the hotel hadn't been at capacity then we would have switched rooms. Our room was so gross that I encouraged Pete to try and crash with a co-worker - he has a very weak stomach. At one point I called down to room service and they answered the phone asking "...do you need some ginger ale and crackers?" Nope - just send me up a could glasses of wine!

Thankfully after a good night sleep the boy woke up feeling MUCH better!

However, Pete and I decided that the kids and I would head back to Greensboro rather than continue on with our plans. Even though it took Drew a week to get sick after Izzy, I was fearful that with such close quarters it could pass to Pete or I quite quickly. Thankfully we never got the bug!

Before the kids and I headed home on Tuesday, we made a quick trip to Battery Park.

Poor Drew! And poor mama and Izzy too! The pictures of him just laying around, feeling horrible, broke my heart. But the pictures of Izzy loving her some room service sure made me smile. :)

Whoo-hoo indeed. Could room service provide valium? This reminds me of the ski vacation to see you two in Denver, and Chris throwing up all over the rental car 10 minutes after leaving the airport.
Or coming back from an LA wedding, and Timmy throwing up all over us 30 minutes into the first flight. (The attendant yelled at me for traveling with a sick infant. 'Cause you know we moms PLAN to board an airplane at 5am with a sick infant, KNOWINGLY getting on a plane with an infant that will vomit on us for the next 5 hours, instead of staying in our lux hotel that faces the ocean in fab LA and waiting out the illness! Rats, now those flight attendants are on to us!)
Hope your all recovered.
Hugs to you all.

Oh, you are not Worst Mom of the Year. You are teaching them to carry on even in the face of adversity : )

We had a bad spring break too...must not be the year for fun spring breaks.
